Essay for Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates Paper Skylar Wakarchuk Ms. Luckhardt September 18th, 2011 Oates, Joyce Carol. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Literature and Ourselves, 6th edition Gloria Mason Henderson, Anna Dunlap Higgins, Bill Day, Sandra Stevenson Waller. New York: Pearson, 2009. 106-120 Have you ever been in a situation where youre invited to this big party and you tell your parents about it and they seem to be drowning you with questions about the certain topic like Wheres the party at? , Whos going to be there? , Will there be any adult supervision? and other related questions. Parents ask these type of questions because theyre concerned for your well being but in Connies case she doesnt have to worry because her of her lack of relationship with her family. Connies father is very unhelpful with raising his children because he works during the day, arrives home late each evening, and as a result of his exhaustion, reads the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed (106). Since he has no intereaction with his children, he offers no guidance to Connie or her sister which leds to their mother taking both roles as both mother and father figure(s). Now Connies sister, June was described as plain and steady, or the good girl who does things right and therefore builds the sibling rivialry between Connie and June. So, the relationship with June is also unpleasant because their mother praises June more often than Connie. Even though most people consider June a responsible adult, at the age of twenty-four, June still lived at home with her parents. Also, June was a secretary in the high school Connie attended which results that Connie has to hear June being praised all the time by her mother and her mother’s sisters. June did this, June did that, she saved money and helped clean the house and cooked and Connie couldn’t do a thing, her mind was filled with trashy daydreams (106). Now, with Connies pretty appearence her mother constantly critizes her about everything and anything that Connie does or doesnt do which leds to negative results like Connie becoming more rebellious by going to places where her parents dont know her whereabouts. Now the lack of relationship(s) with her family makes Connie become more rebellious and leds her to get more attention from other sources like hanging out with her friends and flirting with boys. Maybe if her parents were more concern about Connies well being and safety than she mightve made a different choice. But for these reasons, this leds to the vulnerable state she becomes and easly falls prey for the likes of Arnold Friend.
